If my customers aren't keeping me busy, the Issaquah Police is. I was just plain shocked to see a "Traffic Violation ticket" for $480 in the mail yesterday. This is the after-effect of not carrying my "proof of insurance" on Jan 3rd, the day I had the other accident. As Deva always said, I had 3 options: - Pay - Some hearing ("I made a mistake, please reduce the fine" kind) - Contested hearing (I did not do it... I can prove it) I actually did the crime. I did not carry the proof of insurance on that day. I showed the officer my previous insurance card (which has the same insurance number as my new one), then Police Officer asked me if I have the latest one, then I said, it was the same number, but it was at home and I could get it if he wanted it. He did not seem to care about that and did not say anything at all. Now that I got the ticket for $480, I was thinking what to do. Finally, I decided to go with option 2. I checked the second option, and then posted it in the mail. (I know, I reacted too soon!!). Then, I thought, anyway I am in the group legal plan for Microsoft, and so, I called up my attorney this afternoon. She said, she would get this cleared. She just wanted me to send her a copy of the ticket, copy of my insurance, and my legal re-imbursement form filled up and signed. She also wanted me to mark the THIRD option (contested hearing) and send the original ticket back to court. Then I told her, I made a mistake, and already posted the ticket with the second option checked. She wanted me to call up the court clerk and tell her that I made a mistake and I wanted contested hearing. When I do this, she asked me to get the "case number" from the clerk as well. I called up the court, and was transferred to a lady who handles "Traffic Litigations". I told her exactly what my attorney told me. The clerk asked me if I knew what I was doing by changing the option. I said yes. Then the clerk asked me what the violation was. I told her that it was "failure to show the insurance proof", and actually I had insurance at that time. The the clerk told me to show up in the court any day with my proof of insurance and they would get the case closed without charging me. I went to the court this evening, and they promptly dismissed the charges. Deva/PMen, next time when you get a ticket, do not pay, call up your attorney:-) (Written on February 6th, 2002) Read my other e-mails: |
